Why would you want to join this startup?

This startup is NOT mere wishful thinking; all relevant licenses from the Singapore Police Force (Arms and Explosives) have been obtained since 2013, prior permission for usage and renovation of Maelstrom's first paintball field was granted by the relevant authorities in the form of an indoor climate-controlled environment, rapidly-reconfigurable urban warfare paintball battlefield in 2014 - 2015.

 

This startup is NOT an empty pipe dream; 2 actual military simulation magazine-fed paintball markers (1x AR15, 1x Desert Eagle), the first of their kind were imported and licensed for use in Singapore and stored in our own secured armskote from mid 2013 to mid 2015. This startup has been, and still is doing awesome things; beyond just playing paintball with really cool scenario markers, fighting missions across the world, there is a lot more going on "under the hood" lined up, all in preparation for when the dominoes fall.

What is missing now

• A strong, operational "get your hands dirty" working management team to get the company back on its feet. 
• A new round of investments is to be raised. The funds are used specifically in obtaining and renovating a facility, fully equipping it up and have an operating runway for 12 months.
• New play venues to be explored and negotiated; there are 2 existing locations that the co-founders have discussed with that are still open to having us. As the major licensing work has already been done, we have 2 venue-specific licenses remaining to be obtained when the facility is finalized and in hand.

What is this startup about?

Maelstrom Asia is Singapore's first paintball company using military simulation scenario markers (paintball "guns") and storyline-based gameplay. Where is this startup today?

• Maelstrom Asia is in hibernation mode due to insufficient time capacity on the part of the 2 remaining co-founders (running of their own private businesses) and the after-effects of 2 investors who pulled out at the last minute.
• The startup is financially solvent with a positive bank balance (capitalized with funds from the 2 co-founders).
• The 2 original scenario markers has been disposed in June 2015 due to one of the co-founder requiring to use the armskote as his operating office. 

Who are we looking for and how you can be an integral part of it

We are seeking working co-founders with the following characteristics:

• Willing to work for equity. All 3 co-founders have not been reimbursed for their efforts in the form of monetary compensation or company privileges since day 1. in fact, they have invested considerable amounts of their own funds over the years. The fiery determination in them and the passionate belief in the vision of Maelstrom were the key ingredients that kept all 3 of the co-founders going on despite persistent setbacks. Therefore, this is not for the faint of heart, those seeking a regular salaried job or short-term monetary gains.  
• Have a deep passion for high adrenaline adventure sports. Are you a person who enjoys sky-diving, wingsuit flying, wakeboarding, rocking-climbing and scuba diving? Now imagine if You are that person who is responsible to bring this new adrenaline-pumping highly challenging sport into Singapore and in the near future, all across the Asia-pacific region. 
• Believe in the phrase: The sky is the limit. Why? The 3 original co-founders went against what others said were "impossible odds", to make history in being the first paintball operator in Singapore, with licenses to operate on highly realistic scenario markers, and in getting the legal clearance to set up an indoor facility. This was exceptionally difficult to obtain as there was no past legal precedence over such a business setup running in Singapore.
• (For the guys) you truly enjoyed your National Service in any of the tri-forces. For the original founders, we believe that what we are doing is an extension of how we served in the armed forces. We also have the belief in trying to create jobs for retired SAF veterans who have served the nation and would like to continue serving the nation in a more fun capacity.
• Desire to improve one's self constantly and the ability to think and question critically. 
• Ability to receive constructive feedback and have good interpersonal skills. Banging the table like a caveman or being a long-suffering wallflower during discussions will not get the team anywhere at the end of a day. Neither will dramatic theatrics and exits be guaranteed to get your way too. We have experienced such dramatics happening first hand and to that we say "Never again".

These are the skillsets and capabilities we need on the team:

• Visual communication specialist: Proficiency in media production (videos and photography) to create marketing materials, regular (day-to-day) publicity and documentation. 
• Marketing: Someone who is experienced in market strategy planning, advertising (online and/or offline). This person should be familiar with designing, deploying, maintaining, reviewing of the marketing campaigns. This said person will collaborate with the gameplay designer, visual communications specialist and operations head in ensuring that the campaigns that are to be planned, will be in-line with the objectives, and that the message put across, is coherent and congruent. 
• Gameplay designer: Proficient and highly experienced in designing the game play (linear and non-linear), should be familiar with certain level of script writing. Will have to co-ordinate with operations head in recce-ing for locations across Asia and in determining how these locations can be incorporated. Presentation of these new locations to be in the form of a game flow chart.
• Logisticians: From developing and deploying operational guidelines in setting a high standard of equipment maintenance to daily washing down of facilities, setting up of facilities, cleaning of equipment and clothes and armskote security. This person will be responsible for the logistical requirements of the entire company.
• Operations: Ability to handle daily operations of the company, preferably experienced and familiar with the procedures in dealing with government licensing. Create and/or enhance existing documentation (e.g. safety documents). Outreach to potential venue owners (to set up future paintball facilities), explore partnerships with other organisations and companies. Collaborate with marketing team in planning for the outreach and campaigns on a yearly basis. Collaborate with story writer and gameplay mechanics designer.

As a qualifier, we are NOT interested in the following type of co-founders which we have both seen and experience aplenty; No-Action-Talk-Only intellectuals are NOT needed nor appreciated. Before you start jumping, this is what we meant:

People in this category typically love to "just see-see", read a lot of articles especially from the Internet commentaries, watch YouTube videos and, like/troll the Instagram/FB posts. 

"We can do this... and that.... and that too!"

The all-famous - Mouth Power. Good at giving suggestions, able to give a great speech and why it would work, but when it comes to work execution, they vanish faster than Christina Aguilera's Genie in a Bottle. Their favourite response is usually "I want to do management work... Huh? You mean I must do actual work on the ground??"

"Where's you brain, where's your braiiiin??" 

The intellectuals. They are good at what they do - thinking. They come up with many ideas without any basis and ponder about the possibilities without evidence. We are not appreciative of the time wasted in entertaining the many castles in the air above their heads, including the purple unicorns jumping over the Northern Lights, farting rainbows across the world. 

Flash Gordon Syndrome

They give you complete attention and interest of 3 minutes. In the next second after that 3-min mark, they would "pivot" to the next flashy idea.

We are an old-school startup that had kicked ass and made the impossible possible. We are now effectively in a stage of regrouping, and we are itching to get back on the field to bring the next generation of adrenaline sports in Asia.
